The PlayStation 4 line up is undoubtedly a wonderful gaming console. Although I sometimes feel its overhyped as the Xbox tends to offer more features for less. This is open for debate although you will agree with me that the PlayStation is one gaming console that we all love to hate. This post will comprehensively discuss all PlayStation 4 external speakers connection methods.

Why all the fuss about PlayStation 4 external speakers connection
There are a lot of fuse about connecting the ps4 to external speakers because unlike the ps3, you the ps4 doesn’t support manual audio output. In other words, you cannot use any improvised RCAs/AV cable to output from the PS4. In this article, I will list the four methods by which you can connect your PS4 to an external console. However, keep it in mind that the ps4 slim is missing one very important Audio out port. The PS4 does not support RCA analogue audio output.
PlayStation 4 external speakers connection – The four methods
I will list this in no particular order. However, I will give you the pros and cons of each of the various methods. Please read carefully.

- Connect your Television to your speaker and output your audio. Your TV should use your speakers as its default audio output, though you may first need to select them from your TV’s input menu. This is the commonest means of connecting a PS4 to an external speaker. However, not all HDMI tv has an audio output port. Mine doesn’t have anyway.
- Digital Audio Optical Cable: This is by far the easiest and the complete method of connecting your PS4 and ps4 pro to external speakers or sound systems. Unfortunately, the ps4 slim doesn’t support this because it has no Audio optical port. All you need is to buy a good digital audio optical cable online or offline from a computer shop. I got mine for around $9 on Amazon. The connection is seamless and easy. You will get the true raw sounds from your PS4 using this method. No distortion as long as your speakers are good. In my case, i use a Home theatre system. Please check if your home theatre is having an opt-in port. As long as you have any sound system with the optical in port, this method will work for you. For your perusal, I have some pictures of how a typical digital audio optical cable looks like and how to connect it.
3. PlayStation 4 external speakers connection-Using your original PS4 game controller
To pull this off, you need to buy an aux cable. The 3.5 mm audio cable to be precise. Yes, the exact type that comes with your wired headphones. Aux cables, also known as 3.5 millimeter male-to-male cables, are audio cables with headphone jacks on each end. You can find a 3.5 millimeter cable male-to-male audio cable at most automotive stores, tech departments, or online shops (e.g., Amazon).
Now the process of using this method
- Plug the auxiliary cable into your speakers’ “Audio In” port. This port will resemble a headphone port.
- Plug the other end of the cable into your controller.
- Turn on your PS4 and a connected controller.
- Now navigate to the settings on your PS4 console.Select Settings
- Scroll down to select Devices and press X. It’s near the bottom of the page.
- Select Audio Devices and press X. You’ll see this option near the top of the page.
- Select Output to Headphones and press X. This option is near the bottom of the page.
- If your aux cable isn’t connected to your PS4 controller, this option will be greyed out.
- Select All Audio and press X. This will ensure that all audio played on your PS4 comes through the headphone jack rather than through the TV’s speakers.
The Cons of this method
I tried this method and the total sound rendition was below par for me. MAybe my home theatre is wack lol.

If you’re having connection issues on your PS4, one of the simple yet effective ways that you can try is to reset network settings. In this guide, we’ll show you how this is done.
Learning how to fix PS4 connection issues
There are many forms of internet connection problems in a PS4. Some users may find that their console may appear to be laggy when playing online or only when in a multiplayer game. Others may have slow download or upload issues. For some, wifi connection may periodically fail due to poor signal.
In any of these cases, there’s one easy solution that you can try: reset your PS4 network settings. If the cause of the problem is due to a random network bug, or by a fluke in your console, resetting the network settings is a good, non-drastic fix.
Not all PS4 connection problems can be fixed by network settings reset though so if that won’t change anything on your console, you should continue with your troubleshooting by doing other things such as checking your cables, verifying for possible PlayStation Network server issues, troubleshooting your own local network, checking for wifi signal interference, factory reset, etc.
How to do PS4 network reset?
If you’re wondering how to go ahead and reset your PS4 network, check out the steps below. Resetting your network settings won’t delete your data like a factory reset but you’ll have to reconnect to your wireless networks again afterwards.
- Go to your PS4 Home screen.
- Navigate to Settings.
- Scroll down to the bottom and select Initialization.
- Select Restore Default Settings.
- Select Restore.
- Hit Yes.
What to do if your PS4 still has connection issues after a network reset?
If your PS4 still has a network problem after restoring it to its default settings, that can indicate that the cause may either be found deep within the firmware, or by something outside of it.
To check if the issue is an internal firmware problem, consider wiping the console by doing a factory reset (Initialize PS4 option). This can be done under Initialization menu, or when the console is running on Safe Mode. Factory reset or Initialization option will delete your game data so be sure to create a backup ahead of time.
If the problem is still there even after a factory reset, the real reason is most likely with your connection. Consider doing some network troubleshooting to fix it. You may also consider getting help from your ISP if you have slow or intermittent connection problem.
